Malus ‘John Downie’ is one of the most popular crab apple trees; planted both for its ornamental value and its ability to make a fantastic crab apple jelly. In spring, pretty white 'apple blossom' flowers appear before the fruits. The attractive crab apples are a glossy scarlet colour and are almost 'pear shaped'. The leaves are a fresh green colour when young and mature to deep yellow and burnt orange come autumn. Upright in shape and reasonably narrow, this tree is suitable for a smaller garden. The ‘John Downie’ is also a good tree for attracting wildlife to your garden.
