A native, fully hardy, quite fast growing deciduous small tree. An abundance of golden yellow catkins during February and March followed by shiny, broad heart shaped green leaves that turn a lovely golden yellow in autumn. Grows best in fertile, well- drained soil, particularly chalky soils either in sun or part shade. Corylus avellana ‘Webbs Prize Cob’ produces large clusters of tasty nuts, classed as a cobnut, eaten green or allowed to fully ripen. Partially self fertile but best grown with any other hazelnut variety for reliable pollination.

  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: January to March (Catkins).
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
  • Pollination : Although partially self pollinating a pollinator is recommended (recommend Cosford or wild Hazel Corylus Avellana)
  • Pruning: Aim to keep this hazel to a height of around 2 m (6 - 7 ft) by pruning the main leader to this height yearly. Prune in mid to late February.
