Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea Red Chief is a compact, vigorous deciduous shrub that grows upright with arching branches with small narrow purple red leaves. A member of the Japanese Barberry family, this beautiful little shrub is also named Japanese Barberry Red Chief. It has clusters of small pale yellow flowers in late spring. Its striking purple red leaves will turn a deeper, darker red in autumn to spectacular effect, followed by decorative red berries that last throughout the winter, providing food for small birds.
